Mid Sussex District Council engaged MBA to design a refuse and recycling depot and associated buildings in Haywards Heath to serve the expanding local community. 


Replacing an existing 50 year-old depot, the new buildings are designed to reduce the Council’s greenhouse gas emissions, its energy consumption and its use of water, thereby generating long term financial savings and other benefits for every resident of the District. It is being opertated by Serco.


The scheme includes a workshop, operations buildings and various storage buildings, light and function drove the design with the highly insulating Kalwall cladding which helps to reduce both energy consumption and heat loss by diffusing natural daylight across the interior was employed within the operations building set upon a lignacite masonry plinth. The workshop space is conceived as a light box with polycarbonate cladding panels forming the external walls and roof with all services surfaced mounted for ease of maintenance.
